Wait for the right time. – Don’t rush things. When the time is right for something… a song, a tour, a album, a interview, it will happen. KISS waited for their reunion tour and the results were stellar, selling out nearly 40,000 tickets in 47 minutes to the first show on the tour. The tour lasted for 192 shows over eleven months and earned $43.6 million, making Kiss the top-drawing concert act of 1996.

Over the weekend I got a invite to a new Facebook page promoting a new website. I checked out the page and it was far from ready to promote. So I went and checked out the website, since often people will launch their Facebook page after the website has been launched. Again far from ready to promote. The site was built on WordPress and it had one post, the default post that every new WordPress site has when installed. Absolutely no content, zero. It didn’t even tell me what the site was about, I had a rough idea it was about some type of photo voting based on the domain, but no other info was available. There is a link to View Contestants, but when clicked no contestants. Even better, there is a Enter Contest link, when clicked it says Coming Soon. No way to enter the contest. The website was in no condition to be promoting. It left me with a far from great first impression.

The Facebook page had one post which I thought might be a intro post, but when I clicked the wall post to read it, it just linked me back to the Facebook page… just a loop. Fail. The page has no profile image. Really? You don’t even have a logo you can upload? The info section actually has one short paragraph that talks about what the site is about, but no link to the site. Of course if you do type in the domain you can’t submit any photos or vote on any photos. It is a site/page about photo voting, but no photos in the photo gallery. You are supposed to win prizes, but no list of the prizes. No chance I or anyone who received a invite to the page is going to share this with friends.

The point? We all are excited to talk about our new website, new album, new tour, etc. We can’t wait to get started. Maybe you are even under pressure to launch. But don’t start talking too soon, wait until you actually have something to talk about. If you must launch, don’t announce it and invite people. Make it a soft launch, meaning take it live but don’t tell anyone. Then when things are ready you can make the announcement. If you start promoting too early, such as this case, you risk actually turning people off to what you are working on. Make sure links work. Make sure you have something people would want to read or see. Make sure the main purpose of the site actually works. Make sure you give people something exciting to share with their friends on Facebook and Twitter.

Remember first impressions! Do you want that first impression to be… hmm, there is nothing here why did I waste my time, or would you rather have…. wow that is cool, look at that. I want to try it now.

It might be hard, but wait until the time is right and you are ready before you announce it to the world.

Another real world event is the root of this topic and it also is one of the lessons I learned from working with KISS. 3.
