The New York Post reports that the autographed copy of Double Fantasy John Lennon signed for Mark David Chapman just hours before that same man would murder him is up for sale. As autograph dealer Gary Zimet states, “The album is the most extraordinary artifact in rock and roll history. It has Lennon’s signature on the cover and Chapman’s forensically enhanced finger prints on the sleeve. [And] there are evidence markings from the NYPD.”
The record is expected to sell for $850,000, which injects some controversy into the story. On the one hand, there’s no denying the historical significance and symbolic nature of Chapman’s autographed record, but on the other, someone is directly profiting from Lennon’s death, which has some Lennon/Beatles fans beyond upset. (Zimet went on to say that the seller has asked to remain anonymous for fear of death threats.)
We ask you: Would you buy the autographed LP if you had the money, or does the thought of paying for something that once belonged to the man who killed one of music’s legends disturb or anger you? Sound off in our comments section.
