Author David Meerman Scott made a honest and realistic quote, “if you want 20,000 fans you must do 2000 different things that each generate 10 fans.” This was my favorite quote from 2010 and I am going to take this on as a challenge for 2011 for an ambitious project to give you 2000 different things you can do to generate 20,000 fans.
Some of these items will apply better for larger acts, some items will work for any act. Some may work for you, some may not… not yet. Some these can be done with little effort, some will take some web development, some might even require some significant development. Some of these have successfully worked for me over the years. The point is to create a list of items that would cover a wide range of acts and abilities.
The end result of all this will hopefully be more Facebook likes, Twitter followers, email list subscriptions, more sales and more traffic to your website… more fans!

2000 Things to Generate 20,000 Fans Challenge
39. Add Social Networks to Your Email Signup
This idea comes from a someone who has been following all the tips I have been posted. They wanted to share one that is working for them.
I love reading your posts for the 20,000 Fans Challenge, lots of great ideas! I wanted to share one thing that I have been trying for a few weeks and has been helping with Twitter followers and newsletter subscriptions. Maybe you want to include it on your list?
For the artist that I work with, for his newsletter sign-up I added a few optional fields, which include links for the fan’s Twitter, Facebook and blog. See the signup form:
http://pepe.ag/boletin-oficial
Then every Friday, we thank anybody who has filled out the Twitter field by sending them a tweet.
Example tweet: https://twitter.com/#!/PepeAguilar/status/112389031769284608.
In the tweet we thank the fans for signing up to the newsletter and include a link to the sign-up form. The benefit of this is of course to acknowledged and appreciate those who have signed up, but also encourages those fans to follow the artist’s Twitter account if they are not already. It also encourages other fans to sign up to the newsletter. The newsletter sign-up rate for this artist is already pretty good, about 5-10 fans daily. But on the weekend when these special Tweets are posted, we’ve seen a jump to 30 new sign-ups!
Best,

I would add, that by tweeting a thank you with the newsletter signup, those in the tweet are likely to retweet to all their followers. People like to share when they have been recognized. Of course this means all their follows now have a chance to join your email list.
Great tip!
Genius!
This is a great idea but I have been pondering this for a awhile and at the risk of sounding negative (don’t want to be that guy) I have some things I wanted contribute.
IMer’s (internet marketers) always say that the more fields you have, the less likely people are to sign up. I wonder if all of the extra fields are a deterrent? (unless them seeing that you are looking to connect elsewhere is appealing…hmmmm). Maybe we should A/B test it to see what works best for each of us.
If it works, great. if not you we can still add a simple Google or Wufoo form to the “thank you” page after they have signed up (iFightDragons does something like this already). That way you have them and you could even add more fields – last.fm, YouTube, MySpace, bebo, etc.
The key if get to their info to make a connection outside of the email list and broadcast that connection to the world.
Still though…great idea!
Thanks for including this on your list, Michael!
Corey, I was reluctant to add a lot of fields too. But none of the additional info is mandatory. So if some is put off by that, they can simply just enter their email address.
