What makes you instantly famous? Answer: nothing. It’s when you add up all of the little things. That’s when it turns into one big thing, success.
I’m not just talking about interviews. I’m talking about tweeting that fan back (even if it’s just one or two a day). Whether you understand it or not, that makes their day, week, month, maybe even year. Or meeting some fans that came out hours and hours before the show, just to be the first in line. As a band/artist, you don’t need to get paid for everything you do in order for it to financially benefit you. You don’t have to tweet/meet a fan, but that will like lead to that person buying more merch, concert tickets and music.
Artists/bands, please take action. The reason your career may have plateaued is because you’re not willing to (or too lazy to) take the next step(s) in order to succeed. Here is a small list of some things that you should be doing, but you’re probably not…
1. Take as little as 15 minutes out of your day to respond to fans online on the platform of your choice. It goes a long way and will create a dedication amongst your fans that you never knew could exist.
2. When on tour, actively try to meet fans (outside paid meet & greets). Make the people that are at your show really early feel special.
3. Do interviews that make sense for your career. If you’re trying to portray yourself as a person who is open to different things, participate in interviews that break the grain. DTB offers a ton of options like this, but we’re not the only game in town. I love seeing artists doing something different besides the standard Q&A and/or acoustic session.
4. Keep up with things that are happening in your industry. Commit to learning something everyday because if you’re not learning, you’re not growing and if you’re not growing, you’re dying.
5. Network with people higher and lower than you in your industry. You never know who the next breakout star is going to be.
