I think his songwriting capabilities have a little something to do with he success.
I think that the key is like you guys said. He’s just himself and he doesn’t care what people think. This probably falls into the marketing side of things, but during the promotion of Wasting Light, their latest album, he would drive home four key points, in every interview, over and over: 1. We recorded this in our garage 2. We recorded it on tape 3. Butch Vig produced it and therefore 4. It is the biggest, hardest rocking album we’ve ever done. Then they drove those points home by doing a tour of people’s garages and putting bits of the master tape in the cd cases. I bought the vinyl version, which didn’t have those in it, but oh well.
