2000 Things to Generate 20000 FansAuthor David Meerman Scott made a honest and realistic quote, “if you want 20,000 fans you must do 2000 different things that each generate 10 fans.” This was my favorite quote from 2010 and I am going to take this on as a challenge for 2011 for an ambitious project to give you 2000 different things you can do to generate 20,000 fans.

Some of these items will apply better for larger acts, some items will work for any act. Some may work for you, some may not… not yet. Some these can be done with little effort, some will take some web development, some might even require some significant development. Some of these have successfully worked for me over the years. The point is to create a list of items that would cover a wide range of acts and abilities.

The end result of all this will hopefully be more Facebook likes, Twitter followers, email list subscriptions, more sales and more traffic to your website… more fans!

Here are three more things:

2000 Things to Generate 20,000 Fans Challenge

6. Share the stories behind your songs. – One of my current clients is working on this right now. Music can be a very strong connection for listeners, but that connection can become even stronger if someone can personally identify with what you are writing about. Take the time and write even just a couple sentences about what your song is about.

7. Get your crew involved. – As a fan myself I know I thrive on learning more about what happens behind the scenes. I love it when you get that glimpse behind the show. How it is put together. What a guitar tech does. A view inside the tour bus. Get someone from your crew involved online, let them share some photos, write a blog, make some Twitter posts.

8. Do a Twitter interview. – You will really see success with Twitter when you understand it is about two-way discussions. A really simple way to get that started is do a interview on Twitter. Let your fans Tweet questions and you reply back with answers. TIP: make sure your reply does not immediately begin with @username otherwise all your followers will not be able to see it.

I would love to hear from you, got any things that worked great for you? Leave me a comment.
