This year Michael Brandvold Marketing has founded the Are You Listening Social Media Award. This is awarded to the person or business who has missed the boat the most when it comes to social media. This is not for the person or company who has not even setup social profiles, this is for the person or business that has profiles but has completely missed how to use them. They have completely missed the opportunity to engage with their fans or customers.
One condition on winning the award, you have to give the award back if you actually become aware you won because you were following social media.
Because he is completely absent from all conversation about him and his band the 2011 Are You Listening Social Media Award is presented to… Kip Winger!
What did Kip Winger not do to get this award? In June of 2011 at the Conclave radio conference, a annual gathering of radio and music industry professionals, Winger was mentioned during a presentation. Following the presentation Winger took on a life and was being mentioned throughout the entire day in many Tweets. Not one acknowledgement by Winger. This was a gathering of a radio and music professionals remember. Six months later a number of professionals are still talking about Winger, but now joking how he is absent… where is Kip Winger? Still not one acknowledgement by Winger. I tried to reach out to him via his Twitter and Facebook page, no response. Six months ago he had the opportunity to engage with industry professionals, now he is being given a award to recognize his failure.
Special thanks to Lori Lewis and everyone at Jacobs Media for helping inspire this award.

I BEAT KIP WINGER!!!
I’ve been keeping my digital head just barely above the technological water while the current of Social Media washes me toward GoBackToWork Falls in my Airplane Of Incredible Talent, but at least I keep an eye on Facebook every once in a while!
I BEAT KIP WINGER!!!
Sometimes it’s the little things that keep you going…
Tony, you don’t need to worry. You seem to do a great job keeping yourself in the conversation. Have a great new year!
I would like to know how…when I have multiple filters and news alerts…that I 1) never heard about said event, 2) why the hell this even matters, because Mr. Winger does have a website, a twitter feed, and a Facebook page.
Mr. Winger updates said pages & feeds _when_he_has_time. He works for a living–wow, what a concept!–and if you had been paying attention, he just completed a Kickstarter web-basedcampaign to fund his latest project which _has_ been taking up a lot of his time.
Now, he did, once upon a time, have a link on his website that he could interact with his fans. Unfortunately, because of Beavis & Butt-head like trolls, slugs, and time constraints (that working for a living thing again), it had to be taken down.
So I am complaining that you rescind this award and apologize to him and to us, Winger’s fans. We _understand_ that he doesn’t have the time to muck around with this social media stuff and would rather him put out new music–and yes, it will be promoted on the internet, he’s not that stupid–than to have him occupy his time putting out the Butt-head caused fires.

Heard about what event? The Conclave has been running for over 30 years so it is pretty established.
Yes, Kip does have a website, Facebook and Twitter. I didn’t fault him for not having them, I fault him for how he is using them. Working for a living is no excuse. Many, many artists do that as well and still can be active and engaging online. I am aware of his Kickstarter, I actually pledged $1… for the amazing benefit to have him add me to a email list. Seriously? Nobody should EVER have to pay to be added to a email list. He should be adding every fan for free.
I am saying he should do better and do better for his fans. To post only show updates or to post the same update on all sites is just wrong. There is NO excuse for any artist with a fanbase like Kip to not be responding to what is being said about him, responding to his fans when they mention him.
Muck around with this social media stuff… this is the new music industry, this is the new customer/fan relationship. It is not a fad to play with. It is the new way of doing business.
All that being said, sorry but I am not rescinding the award. He is an example of a artist who should be doing it much better… FOR HIS FANS!
good point. maintain a level of engagement.
